went to a dealer today to get some part numbers and a quote.

    part no. for a flywheels
    bora v6 4motion - 021105266J (same as a 6-speed 24v jetta vr6)
    golf r32 - 022105266L

i checked ecs and they sell both with a price difference of ~$70. from the pictures they look very very similar, if not the same. so my question still is will the r32 flywheel fit? cheers

    hey nick

yeah i got the kit. been driving around for almost two months now.
i reckon the kit is worth it. i got a 16.5lbs (stock dual mass is 26.5lbs) single mass billet steel flywheel and a stage 1 luk clutch kit.
now the car revs quicker and got a bit more poke. you can feel the wave of torque coming in at around 3000rpm and then another one at around 5500rpm.
the clutch is incredibly grippy, and since my release bearing was completely gone before, now the clutch pedal is much lighter. the drivability hasn't changed.

now the drawbacks. it is pretty loud on idle. and there's some vibration when stationary and if you move off the line very very slowly (or parking in reverse). the chatter gets worse with the aircon on. but if your stereo is on (mine's on all the time ) then you can barely hear it.

if you want to find it, just specify vw-jetta mk4-2004-24v vr6, and just scroll down. there's a couple of kits available.

thanks so is it the lighter flywheel that causes the chatter? and what are the benefits of switching from the oem one and stopping you from just upgrading the clutch to one with grip / clamping force

yeah it is just a flywheel chatter and has no negative affect on the engine/gearbox mechanics.

the oem flywheel is dual mass - has two plates connected to each other by a springy mechanism (don't know how it works), this mechanism allows a tiny play between the plates which eliminates the vibrations in the gearbox and smoothes out jerky shifts. the drawback is that it is very heavy and very "brittle". if you dump the clutch off the line there is a possibility of damaging the mechanism (and/or breaking it with further damage to the gearbox/engine).

an aftermarket single mass is just a single plate. its is lighter - providing better acceleration/deceleration, putting less strain on the engine, improving fuel economy (in theory), and is near 'impossible' to break. and its cheaper

i'm thinking of changing from my lightweight 14lbs ecs single mass flywheel to the 20.5lbs ecs single mass flywheel to get rid of the chatter because it annoys me a little. (the 20.5lbs ecs flywheel is the same weight as the dual mass G60 flywheel, and apparently it doesn't cause any chatter...)
It's an expensive thing to do just for a small thing that annoys me, so i only plan to do it if i end up getting my gearbox rebuilt with an LSD...
THis is the flywheel for the 1.8t, so a little off topic...
