i only run my 2004 2.0lt bora on 98 octane and i havn't had any probs. The only issues i have had are a couple of bad loads of fuel, started blowing alot of black smoke, ended up having to replace the fuel pump.
Just a quick one about fuel - the GTI is specified to use RON95, and I would assume that the engine tuning is done with that in mind too?
So does this undo gains that might be had from putting RON98 in? Reason I ask is that I've been getting the occasional backfire when accelerating fairly quickly and changing up through the gears, and I've been running it on 98. Or could it just be because it's due for a service...

just run 98. Keeps injectors clean(er), less likely to ping. Worth the extra 5c
98 is the stuff to use for sure, the car will run better in all temps, there will be less pinking and the ECU won't be pulling timing out.

I only use 98 in my GTI.
2000 Mk IV GTI
So I put her in for her first service today as I had a day off work and she was nearly due. Pretty standard stuff, however the last day or so I've been noticing that the idle will normally start off around 800 RPM but during the course of a drive of any length it'll creep up towards 1200, and when this happens the power seems down too. Mentioned this to the mechanic, who reported back that there was a number of throttle fault codes appearing. He reset the throttle but they would come back straight away. So it looks like I now need a new throttle assembly which was quoted from VW @ $1100.
The mechanic said that aftermarket options are available for a couple of hundred less and are essentially the same, but surely there are other options?
Oh and I also swapped the wheels over - car is now riding on the Montreal II's. The original rims that are shown on the car (16x6.5, 5x100 studs, offset ET42) will be going up for sale as soon as i get 10 posts up, they are in great nick and come with Dunlop SP Sport tyres (205 55R16 91W) which have varying tread levels. PM if interested.
dont buy a throttle body, it just needs an adaptation. 2 secs to do
The throttle body issue is pretty common, they can be cleaned out and reset (well, a few times anyway I guess) so I wouldn't worry about replacing it yet unless you can throw the $$ at it or the rough idle really pisses you off. If you're keen to replace it though, look around for prices first!

In the words of Pauline Hanson - Please explain.
Geoff - the mechanic reset it a number of times with the errors coming straight back, however not sure that he cleaned it out or not (probably not). He seemed to think it was a problem with the throttle computer, so not sure how cleaning it out would help? PS I have no idea about this stuff so feel free to educate me!
your mechanic obviously reset the codes, but you need to reset the basic settings then reteach it. its pretty easy. you need vagcom though. if you have or your mechanic has vagcom ill put up how to do it
