Maybe ripping through the dirt (ie. offroad) you have loosened theflange on your downpipe or something...?
Hey guys, I racked up 2800kms in the holidays and fgor the last 500 or so my car (MK4 GTI AGU) developed a mega exhaust drone at about 4500rpm.
It's very boomy, most noticable on trailing throttle and sounds as if it's coming front the front half of the car - ie not the tailpipe)
Any known dramas there?
What should I do?
Maybe ripping through the dirt (ie. offroad) you have loosened theflange on your downpipe or something...?
^^, or you may have busted a weld though nothing more than corrosion. Jump under with a torch, and you may be able to see a leak. You should see some black, sooty marks if there is a leak there.

Just check that your gearbox mount hasnt cracked and allowed the engine to sit back a bit. This would change the note of the exhaust. This is situated under the airbox.

Thanks guys. I haven't been able to see anything wrong yet (that said I don't have ramps or a proper light to check things out with).
Golf Loon suggested it might be a misfire... I took it out for a drive last night and this could be the case. One thing concerning me is that there is no check engine light when I start the car. It doesn't even flash on with all the other warnings when I turn it on. Is this normal?
I can't comment as far as a misfire is concerned.
Just thinking (even though it is noticeable at 4.5k), have you left it running and swung your head under there to listen for a leak? Your exhaust still standard? Just saying it would be more difficult to hear inside the cabin, even though there is a distinct "change in sound" above idle.
