driver door lockbarrel or actuator broken?

Hi all, i Have a mk4 99 model with central locking (not remote, only by turning the key in the lock).
around a week ago the drivers side stopped locking/unlocking the whole car and i now have to lock up via the passenger door.

the key well still enter the drivers side lock and turn both ways, just nothing happens, feels like it's just turning without any load on it, compared to how it used to when it unlocked the doors.

would this be the barrel thats $hat itself or the actuator module playing up?

I took the door card and inner door panel off today and there wasn't much room to see whats going on in there, but didn't look like much was turning when i turned the key.

anyone had similar troubles or knows the remedy?

    thanks alot. Dan

Thanks man thats a helpful read, i might eventually take all the door guts out and find those solder points when i get a free morning, would that have caused the key to just turn freely though?

the passenger side sometimes has the problems shared in that thread like needs to be done twice for it to lock etc, but the drivers side has just gone rather loose altogether and does nothing, which was making me think it might be something mechanical??

Make sure you have the triple square tool for the lock bolts, (black bolts on door frame).
Mine were also seized and needed heat to get them off.

totally have just had the same problem. Door won't open, key turns but feels like it has no load on it at all. Keep trying to make time to pull the inside panel off to have a look. Not fun walking around to unlock and lock from passenger side. Mrs. likes it tho, always opening the door for her. pfft haha

someone tell me how to fix it!

was just coming on to post about a related problem.

if its whats happened with mine, theres 2 small brass rings in the locking assembley one or both will be broken, been like that for around 12 months in my car now, havnt fixed it as to repair it requires a new locking assembley, you cant buy the rings seperate. about 220 from vw.

could goto a wreckers and get it cheaper, dont know how good the parts will be tho.
