The dreaded DUU gearbox or something different?

Decided to go for a drive around mt panorama tonight but after getting to the top an awful grinding sound started only when rolling in neutral or in gear, under load it stops, stopped and had a look for anything obvious and I found the inner guard liner had split and was touching the tyre. Fixed that and tried again and it's still doing it but not as bad. Car is stock height and on r32 wheels for anyone questioning drive shaft rubbing.

This sounds similar to when my box died. The rivets on the crown wheel sheared off. After a few days the sound got louder finally gave way.
Mechanic said rivets dell out when draining oil.
