Not quite sure what you're referring to, Mitch...have you got any specific pictures?
Ok guys i now have my first car and am now officially the owner of a MY 2000 GLE manual golf in dark blue with only 85 000 on the clock.
Im picking it up sometime in the next week but i was thought id ask on here about something.
The trim on the door where the handle is has come away on both front doors. Me and the old man are planning on tackling this problem but i thought id ask on here to see if theres anyone who's DIY'd this aswell and see how they went about it.
Also i was thinking of changing the trim color of the 'door cards' from the light grey to another color but i wasnt sure too what color. Anyone got any ideas?
Anyway heres the car and a picture of the trim aswell for reference.

I have circled where it is in this picture. its hard to see because its dark and i didnt notice in the pics before i looked at the car.
The trim has come away from its backing and im going to have to glue it back onto the door in short.
Is the problem clear now?
Ohhhhh right! Hah.
Well then...assuming the doorcards are like the mk3 ones (which I'm actually not sure of...) then that's a real pain to get to. You have to rip the door card apart and re-stick it then glue it all together again

Well the old man was showed me the other night, because the window in the front passenger door of his territory had slipped off its tracks, the inside workings of a door, so i guess he knows whats going on.
His a bit of a car guy so that heps i guess.
Any ideas on a differnt color?
Hey Mitchy,
Have a look in the FAQ/DIY section, it's a sticky at the top of the MkIV forum list, and go to the VWVortex FAQ/DIY section, There's a couple of DIY's on pulling apart the interior of the doors.
Just make sure you have a dremel or similar tool
I Think if you have a dark grey interior a light grey fabric section and handle would look good, come to think of it that's what the VWVortex tutorial has I think........
Don't think that you will do this cheaply though, the cheapest figs I have form a wrecker was $100 per whole door card, you have to dispose of the bits of it you don't need and depending on the quality of the door handles etc, upto $200 for mint handles, practically brand new with no scuffs or scratches.![]()

Mitchy,
Had EXACTLY the same problem as you and in the same location.
I am handy with this sort of stuff and gave it a shot.
Few things to watch our for:
1 - yep, you have to remove the door skin - that's easy
2 - you actually have to remove the fabric insert from the door panel
THAT is a PITA as the fabric inert panel is made from a compressed fibreboard and then fixed to the door skin by a number of small plastic tabs that are ultrasonically melted to fuse the door skin and the fabric insert panel.
If you dremel those off, you have nothing to secure the fabric insert panel with.
3 - the fabric has foam on the other side, so you try and re-stretch the fabric on the insert panel; you can't just use a spray adhesive as it attacks the foam & becomes gluggy. So you will struggle to get a factory look.
In the end I bought a second hand door skin from a wrecker for $50.

Even came with half a grab handle & door handle/window swicth surround!
IMHO not worth the buggerising around.
