Door lock pins...how to remove them?

This is probably a dumb question, but has anyone removed the door lock pins of their mk4 golf? Do you just pull them out or is there a technique?

    They should unscrew.

You might need the assistance of some pliers, though.

Do those lock pins actually serve any purpose except to pinch your arm?

Leaving your house on a beautiful day to head into the office is "not a good thing to be doing" but we all do it.
With regards to the lock pins, can't say that the've bovered me.
