Do you think they know something???

    Hi all,

As I have written in the past, i plan on turfing the MkIV when it's warranty runs out so I have been looking at alternative modes of transport. The golf has gotten me into the Hot Hatch mood, so I have been looking in that area. So far i've looked at the Renaultsport Megane CUP, Mitsubishi Ralliart Lancer and the Holden Astra SRi Turbo. I also plan on looking at staying with the VW brand with the MkV Golf GTi (maybe the pirelli edition) and the Skoda Octavia RS, having a go in the OPC VXR, aka HSV VXR and Mazda 3 MPS.

What I have found very very disturbing is VW in regards to trade in. Now my car has a few paint blemishes, but even un-clean Renault and Holden both offered me $6k trade in.....

    VW offered me $3,500...........

Maybe they know how under-done the MkIV really is and this is their way of admitting it......?

Holden and Renault I would think are suffering more than VW in the current times.

Possibly VW did a better deal on a new car ? or they plan to sell themselves ? In any case, you should tell them you got 6500 from somewhere else.

    What about an R26 ?

Well, Renault are actually Nissan so they're not too bad, especially after the order of stuff they placed at work for OE supply!!!
VW (I won't name the dealer, but it's not my local one...) just seemed completely devoid of any thought that I was interested in their car and obviously didn't think an engineer could afford an elitist Golf GTi!! I asked at the reception counter for some help, but waited 15mins, then left. I ended up taking a 2nd hand GTi from a used car lot for a test drive!

    What about an R26 ?
Exactly what i'm after, especially in the yellow!! But, they aint available anymore and there's only 1 for sale in the country, and that's in SA and black, a fair hike seeing as I only get Sat to go car hunting

BUT, the current (how's this for an official name!) RenaultSport Megane 225 CUP five door (I kid you not!) Is the same car, but with leather, a centre armrest and missing the LSD even so, damn it corners hard!!!! Harder than the Golf!! PS, warrandyte is an AWESOME place to test drive a car!!

they know how underdone the mk4 1.6 is!!!! dont put all mk4's into that catagory plz mate!

never trade in a car and if you are, drop it on them at the end of the deal... after you have got the best possible price then tell them... then when they say how much, you tell them what you want and if the dont deal,,,walk away, they will call you in 5 minutes! dealers are dying atm... its a buyers market.

Yeah I know, a friend of mine has a 2001 2L golf and the only problem she's had in that is she likes making gutters and her (genuine, ouch!) RS4 alloys get very cozy, it's a damn shame

I was offered a brand new, 2008 plate Ralliart lancer yesterday for $36,000 on the road, with sunroof and Rockford Fosgate stereo! Pity it drives like poo and has seats worse than a Suzuki swift! And looks like a Fish that mated with a bull terrier....

Not sure if this link will work but redbook have your car (I'm going by your sig) for trade in between 6300 - 8100

    http://redbook.com.au/used-cars/deta...d=11BE044B1AFA

But, Im not 100% sure how the whole trade in thing works as I have never done it.

Are there any used car sales people on here that can enlighten us on the formula?

Dont worry hugely on the 'trade in price' alone.
It is the WHOLE change over price that is the matter...

If they discounted the car $4k, and offered you $3.5k for the trade, the figures are the same if u take it like they discounted the car $500, and gave you $7k for the trade.......... Sound a bit better?? All depends on how the salesman pitches it to you.

Give them a 'realistic' change over price for them to match, or get close to... Thats my suggestion...
