You should have only about 5mm freeplay on the dual flywheel. Thats excessive and if it clatters at idle then yes...pooped!
Have been suspecting i have a worn out dmf for a while now.
Finally got round to having a look at it, i pulled the starter out and raised one wheel off the ground so i could rotate the drive train.
I think I already know the answer, but can anyone 100% confirm that its shagged, take a look at the video:

Yep, that ones completely gone.
Haha that's a nice one. Usually when they get that bad they jam up on themselves.
wow thats some movement!
what are you looking to replace with??
looking at the SMF conversion kit from ECS. Also going to get a quote from VW for a new OEM DMF (doubt i will go down this path).
Any other recommendations? car is 100% bog stock, so don't need an aggressive clutch or anything like that...
This car drives like a pig with the flywheel like this, it makes it almost impossible to drive smoothly. you can feel the slop in the flywheel everytime you take your foot off the throttle and put it back on again. Sometimes the flywheel feels like it binds up, then releases suddenly resulting in a thump and a weird lurching sensation.
Installed ECS stage 1 clutch and 20lb single mass flywheel over the weekend.
The car is much nicer to drive now, the clutch pedal is actually lighter than the standard clutch, but at the same time feels like it has more bite which is good.
The single mass flywheel does have a detectable increase in vibrations, but its only very slight and below 1500rpm, its not an issue at all - if you didn't know it had been done you would never pick it.
ECS tuning is great. I grabbed a SachsBorg Stage 1 clutch and a ecs tuning single mass flywheel. Such a great car to drive now, livened it up and the response is terrific
