Diff for 01 bora 4 mo

My bora has been making horrible clicking noises when reverse parking and doing sharp turns / ESP comes on / and it 'skids' does a sort of 'bunny hop'.

Mechanic says it needs a new rear diff. Or at least the pump in the diff might need looking at.

How much (roughly) would this set me back ? The mechanic said he might be able to use the diff from an Audi S3 in mine. Would that be OK or is Bora specific diff better?

I am clueless, need knowledged people to help.

    cheers

You need to get it scanned with VCDS and prove the fault before spending money or speculating on a fix. Find a VW specialist first.

Got the same problem man (actually several people do) and it's most likely the diff. If the Haldex isn't serviced every 60,000km this usually happens. I rang up a mechanic who's done this twice before and to replace the diff with a second hand one, replace oil and filter, etc it cost $2600.

You can keep running your car like this and it won't get any worse, just annoying and it'll chew your tyres a bit more. It may also put more stress on other parts but you just have to turn wider and quicker.

This problem didn't show up on a VCDS scan unfortunately for me. It would have been a lot easier if it did..

Diff then by the sounds of things. Not sure if G60JAY up here in Brissy has one. I was in his shed the other weekend and pretty sure he had a back end to match a 6 speed 4wd transmission he had.

Sorry to be pedantic, but I see this a lot in these discussions and I think the ambiguity is damaging. The Haldex viscous coupling unit appears to be what you are talking about, it is definitely not a diff, it is a viscous coupling and is a separate unit from the diff (though it does bolt onto the diff).

I think one of the major problems in these discussions is some people who know the difference (including lots of mechanics) refer to the Haldex viscous coupling as a "diff" which confuses those who don't know the difference.

This is true, after reading that the mechanic had scanned it. I assumed the diff diagnosis to be correct.

Either way the Haldex and diff would be still bolted together most likely.

    Try G60JAY anyway.

2600 is just not going to happen. i just don't have that kind of money atm

is a 'haldex viscous coupling' a smaller job compared to the diff ? would it be cheaper ?

    Lhttp://www.billswebspace.com/HALDEX.pdf

Found this pdf about the Haldex online.

Never changed one so can't comment in the time it would take, sorry. A couple of hours probably.

I think a few controllers have quit and not the couplings themselves. look for posts by goodfella.

Governer, take some time to read right through this thread http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...eds-60037.html
Quite a bit of what you are going through has been covered here already. It may not provide the answers, but it will help you to understand what is happeniong and what others have experienced.
