Also, if the problem is a Haldex one option might be to import a used one from the UK where they are plentiful. When I was having diff issues I found an entire rear diff unit with the Haldex still bolted to it for sale for 200 pounds. Shipping would be a killer but a Haldex is a lot smaller than a diff, if you are willing to wait for one to be shipped over by boat it might not cost too much.

If I ended up having to go down that route I was planning to see if I could find a volunteer from the UKMKIVs forum who would be willing to help me source and ship a diff in return for them keeping what ever parts came with the diff that I didn't need.

hey djork,

i did actually read that thread some time ago, and it seemed that quite a few people have the same problem. Can I ask where you found that diff unit ? Was it on Vortex forums ? 200 pounds (plus shipping + fitting) vs. $2600 is a no brainer.

Definitely cheaper to get it from overseas if you can source one, but also note on top of that you have to pay for labour (8 hours) plus new haldex oil and filter. So perhaps add at least an extra $800-$1100 on top of the part depending on where you go.

BTW did the mechanic scan you car for fault codes?

jpflorez, you need a new mechanic

8 hours labour to fit a Haldex?!?!? When my diff went they pulled the diff, removed the Haldex, sent the diff off to be reconditioned, spent plenty of time chasing up the diff reconditioning guy (who does great work but is a bit of an unreliable diva when it comes to timing) reconnected the Haldex to the diff unit, did a filter and fluid change on the Haldex, refitted the whole lot and road tested it and it definitely wasn't anywhere near 8 hours labour.

From what I understand (as usual feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm used to it, I'm married) you can change a Haldex without even having to drop the subframe.

The unit I saw for 200 pounds was advertised by a VW breaker on eBay.co.uk but I saw a few others on individual wreckers sites, I don't have any info anymore, I just went to google.co.uk and started searching (I used the UK Google so I could narrow down the search to UK sites only)

There are currently quite a few listed on eBay.co.uk including the one I saw last month at 200 pounds. There is even one with diff, Haldex + subframe including axles and hubs for 350 pounds

OK - so i'll ask the guys to check for any error codes codes and then ask them if it could be the diff oil/fluid (supposedly lifetime guaranteed) or the Haldex fluid (every 60,000km).

So far as i know, my bora doesn't whine at all (something my mechanic asked me). It just does the god-awful bunny hop thing in reverse/sharp turns.

Life time is the life of the manufacturers warrenty, this was 3 years or 100000km for mk4 VW's. Change your diff oil even if your diff is in perfect working order and it has never been done, any good 75w90 gear fluid will do the job and you need a fly sh** over a litre.

I reckon that if you have no whine and you have the bunny-hopping problem that it's haldex unit and not diff.

If the diff (which is a purely mechanical part, no electronics or hydraulics at all) was messed up enough to bunny-hop like that wouldn't it be accompanied by some whine or pretty nasty crunching noises?

Governor which mechanic are you using?

Can I highly recommend you take your car to Canberra VW Centre in Belconnen? The guys there are very knowledgeable and have been nothing but a pleasure to deal.

I suspect they will be able to diagnose your fault quickly for you, and provide a quote to fix the problem.

You can keep running your car like this and it won't get any worse, just annoying and it'll chew your tyres a bit more. It may also put more stress on other parts but you just have to turn wider and quicker.

That's more than I paid for a rear Peloquin diff from the states, landed and installed

Someone is having a lend of you for a used one at that price.
