Rocco, how's the porker going? Cheers mate!
Long time no updates. Still no updates really, nothign has changed. Just sourcing the gear for a solid service at the moment and looking to get the trio of VF mounts because mine feel pretty shagged. Noticed plenty of movement when on the dyno and it's probably a good reason why my gearbox feels so crap at the moment. haha.
Ever since I thought about buying the car, the boost or NA route is one that faces all R32 owners. Basically, for all the cost and hassles, I really wouldn't bother with a charger. Alastairs was very very nice to drive (the one I drove prior to purchasing mine) but ultimately if I wanted boost, it would have to be a turbo.
The main point - I'm definitely going to stay NA. And been massively inspired by this:
Gareth Spiller's Mk3 Vento, R32 engine conversion + individual throttle bodies.
So basically at present it's the waiting game until I come out of my time and hit tradesmans rates. The plan is pretty loose at the moment, and obviously need to find someone happy to tune for me later on, which will dictate what sort of combinations we go for.
Off the top of my head:
static compression ratio is 11.25:1. This will probably go up
Schrick 276 or 272 cams with springs and retainers to suit
big big valves
ITB's, probably through Jenvey like Gareths. Badger 5 also have some hardware available.
So yeah, basically spooling turbos is a massive fun factor and the car after this will have a big single, but in keeping with the "nature of the car", the instant whack and response is what I want to maintain. Hence staying NA. The boosted ones sound cool, but lose the vicious NA roar (Alastairs charger whistle wasn't charger whine due to helical gears, not spurs, which I would prefer). Anthony's 2 VRT motors sounded awesome, but not as savage as I want. So the sound plays a part in it too.
I'm going to pull the interior out etc, replace it with not much. Very minimal. (The dash will stay etc, but Im thinking 2 front seats no carpet yada yada). One of the main positives is hopefully that allows me to get new carpets, get the seats redone, new interior plastics etc and then I can rebuild it back to better condition than when I started with it. For me, I want to know that I can get it back to "immaculate" if/when I choose to do so.
So yeah, just echoing thoughts out loud, it's a fair way off. Just need to be patient, sort out my house purchase first, then this R32 will become something pretty special![]()
Just got some more pictures for now:
