    Dashboard light question

    Hi guys,
I'm planning on buying a 2002 Mk4 Golf GTI, but I had a quick question regarding a light I saw on the dash while test driving it. Sorry I don't have a picture, but hopefully someone will know what I'm talking about.
There was an icon that lit up underneath the tacho that looked like a mini tacho itself. I have no idea if this is a warning light or just something standard. Does anyone know what this means?
Even better can someone provide a link to a picture of a normal dash and what all the lights mean?

The car was in good condition and regularly serviced by VW, so I think it should be ok, but I just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks

Was it green? As that'd be the cruise control light. It's on when cruise control is turned on (but not necessarily active)

    As seen here

Ah ha yes that would be it. Thanks very much for clearing that up for me

I have one more minor query though. The red LCD panel seemed a bit dim. Any idea how hard that might be to fix, or how much VW may charge to get it resolved?

There's a light sensor just below the 0km mark on the speedo, so the contrast on the LCD does vary in different light conditions (separate to the adjustable backlight on the globes themselves behind the console).
Also, it does fade a bit if you're parked in the sun but once it cools down it returns to normal.

The only way to fix them permanently is to replace the LCD screen by desoldering off the internal circuit board (available on ebay ~$100) or a new cluster from VW (well over $1000).

If it is evenly dim, then it may have been the contrast working - if it was splotchy or uneven brightness of the pixels then it was FUBAR

Ok thanks for all the help guys. I've started the buying process (Pending confirmation that the major service has been completed) and hopefully will post some pics of my new baby soon. I seriously can't wait
