dodgy phone shots i took this morning.

I want to disconnect the two boards, put the main board in the glovebox or somewhere and then run the number panel on the dash pointing up onto the glass. i'm not sure it will reflect right or work right but i'm going to give it a go and see.

i'm pretty sure your talking about the right engine as it appears there is coils as 'fkn' put up earlier. this may spoil my whole operation?

so yeah i'll check out the engine number when i get home this arvo and send it through, hopefully we can find somewhere.

otherwise have to stick it on one of your rides...love to see the combi. my mate is looking around for a 21 window but fvck they are expensive at the moment. he's also doing a 68 (i think) oval window ragtop from the ground up. taking a while but it will be a show stopper.
It might not be as simple as it seems. When you have a multimeter with an inductive lead for engine RPM, it will only work with distributor ot coilpack designs as they measure the pulse of the spark as it travels down the lead. Stick type coils dont have this arrangement and it is a very low energy signal sent to the coil. The kit you have might not pick it up acurately and if the GTI coil works on a dead spark arrangement, it will get fooled.

yeah it does count the number of big 'spikes' coming from a central coil and then use this to calculate the RPM. so if its low voltage going to each pencil coil which itself develops the voltage for the spark then i don't see how i can make this work.

might test it out on my charade (which i think has a central coil pack ).

the other hard part is getting it to look good on the mirror which is laminated and therefore ghosts the reflection but that is stage 2 if i get to it.

been off for a bit but i'm back:

got the short shift kit and installed it. the shift travel is good but the shift action is not. getting into and especially out of reverse is terrible. this is no doubt due to my install and how i replaced the cables. anyone have any experience with doing this?

Maybe just check the installation procedure that you did maybe did something wrong, also does it need lubing at all?

Try changing the gearbox fluid I know when I did mine it felt fantastic and it was incredible, but thats slightly off topic but you never know
I'm soo euro even my missus is shaved...

i did everything as per the instructions as far as i interpreted them. I also used heaps of lube before i put her in. (had to take rthe opportunity for a bit of inuendo)

the only thing i may have (probably did) wrong was when i reconnected back the two cables, this should be the only part where you can get it wrong.

i would mind changing the box oil. have to check if that was done during the recent major service? That isn't going to help me in this case though. I think i need someone who has experience with the clutch and shifter mechanism to re-adjust it.

i.e. if you look at the pic of the shifter assembly in one of the first posts i had to take off the cables at 1 & 3, i marked them before taking them off so i can return them to the right place but it doesn't feel right.
