Converting MK4 in-dash cup holder to mobile phone holder/cradle

So I've been meaning to convert my in-dash cup holder into a mobile phone holder.. well at least the driver's side so I'll still have at least one cup holder. Before I start hacking into it, has anyone done this before with an elegant solution? I have no time/energy to think properly.. I'd like to be able to still slide the holder back in.

Note: Currently my wife and I have iPhones (4s and 5) which have the same width. This can be a near-sighted project without planning for future handset sizes..

buy an iphone dock, and see if it will just glue to the base?

    like this..

if you wanted to get fancy, you could even run power down behind the stereo to the ciggy lighter and have it as a charging dock.

I was going to hack my ashtray with a dock in it. The dock is just a little too big, I could probably get away with just cutting down the dock and not even hurting the ashtray.

My phone (4s) with cable in the bottom fits pretty snug in my cup holder already. How nice do you want it to look?

For me personally, just a holder. I have bluetooth through my headunit. If I use maps etc, I want to be able to see it.

There may be some mounts here that could be retro fit...
