    It's a 99 golf gti, why would it chatter with no load on it?

    They just do, some worse than others. The bearing in mine was less than 4 months old, minimal KMs. Blew the motor and rebuilt with a stage 3 clutch. Reused the bearing and it sounds rough as.

    Too big a job to pull the box just to do the bearing.

    AC increases the load on the engine, same as when the fans kick in. The alternator is working harder and that means the ECU regulates the idle to stop it stalling.
