Does the pedal stay at the bottom of the the travel? Does it grind going into gears? I am thinking that maybe the clutch fork has failed big time.
I had a really low pedal on my A3 that turned out to be the clutch fork. $40 from VW.

Today when i was driving home from work, the clutch dropped and the bite was extremely low, and very difficult to change gears,

yeah its really low, and does grind into gears i hope its the fork
Have it checked mate, could be hydraulic failure, clamp off the slave and see how pedal feels, see if you can pump the pedal few times too to see if it selects better , could also be master. If it turns out to be the fork then itll be the heavy pressure plate thats caused it. Like i say have it checked way better than net diagnosis. Forks dont just break, clutch must be heavy before hand. Even if it is then im sure i would do a clutch at the same time.
How has pedal felt up until now?
Cheers

hey jmac, car is with my mechanic, he played with the slave and it didnt get better and thinks it is to due with the fork.
Im not an expert with clutches, what clutch should i upgrade to
If its the fork then the pressure plate woiuld have been the culprit, way to heavy for it. Mate grab yourself an ECS stage one kit, comes with Sachs 228 plate, sachs cover ( clutch is sprung) and you can chuck away the crap dual mass flywheel as this kit has a nice lighter single mass flywheel. Just fitted another today. Good kits with all the hardware bolts etc, done that many i can now sell the clutch aligniong tools, tripping over them LOL. If its the fork then it obviously was the pressure plate being the issue, then i would also grab a slave cyl, cant go wrong.
Like i say they dont just break its just the result of a knackered clutch assembly. If it turns out to be that. Ah and before i forget you will need the before mentioned Fork
Cheers and good luck with it
