Hmm, I hate trying to chase noises/knocks/vibrations etc, i really need to hear/feel it myself as i m sure with the other guys here. Worst comes to worst see if you can borrow a set of chassis ears, they can make tracking noises and problems alot easier. I hate to say it but shy of that you will really need to cover your critical components in depth, think about what conditions change and what forces are acting on the car when it happens. I.e if it happens just when braking, it is occuring when the nose is down, inspect the components as necessary.

Yeah well it seems to just coincide with clutch and brake use and seems to be getting slightly worse. Would I be able to see if the dogbone mount was broken or something somehow?

Chassis ears one of the best tools in my kit to be honest beats the screwdriver!! Anyway, dogbone good place to start at $35 cant go wrong. There is a few things that can clunk in there, can you get it to do it if you roll forward, brake then reverse?? that really moves everything around when you do that. What makes it hard is the fact that noise transmits very well. Thats where the chassis ear is valueable , well after an hr of chasing anyway.

Hey Gavin. I'd love one! Are they just the stock ones? How hard are they to fit?
And how much are chassis ears??
The chassis ears sound like a very good investment! Hsha oh, and what exactly are they? XD

    Powerflex

This one. I have a stiffer one BFI but you need some way of compressing the dog bone to fit it. The Poweflex is just compliant enough to get with body weight.

I also have a spare dog bone,so you can swap in the bush and don't have to get out from under the car to do the job.

    Cheers

Sounds great! What is BFI? Sorry for the n00b question haha
How does one compress it, just press down on it kinda thing? And I would obviously need the car up in the air somehow would I?

I don't normally do my own work as I am not very mechanically minded
Would it cost much to get a workshop to do it?
    Thanks heaps Gav BTW!

You can get a cheap set like anything but if your using them alot best to splurge as newer styles have wireless sensors, so much easier and less interference with unwanted noise transfer through cables. theres some on ebay $270 aust, with wireless sensors and a cheaper $180 aust set cable based.

Chassis ears are like a portable microphone but for your car. They differ in style but ultimately the end result is the same, you usually get 2 - 4 pick ups with fairly long cords or wireless sensors, the receiver/amplifier + a set of headphones. You attach them to where you think the noise may be originating and go for a drive. They pick up the slightest noise and really amplify it.

I had to diagnose a creaking noise that kept coming back to the dealership, took it for a drive, identified what it was i was chasing, chassis ears on where i thought, drove it again, bang straight away clear as day, lower ball joints on the front stub axle. Really invaluable tool. And as Jmac said, beats prodding around with a screwdriver haha. If you do get some and get the cable style ones make sure you secure the wiring properly as although the cording is insulated it can still pick up unwanted noise which will affect quality.

Did you manage to fix the clunk noise? I'm having issues with my front suspensions too. How much did it cost to change the control arms if i may ask?
