To chip or not to chip

Car is currently at European Car Centre in Newcastle getting engine mounts fixed up. They deal Powerchip upgrades and I was looking into getting one done whilst it's in there, anybody have an experience with these?

Car is standard 1999 Gti. I was planning to do dump pipe & cat as well.

Also the car has 190k, would this be too aged of a car to be worth spending money on?

How much is the Powerchip? There's plenty of other options out there.

If the car has decent service history I don't see why tuning it at 190000 should be a problem. Sparkplugs, ignition control modules, vacuum lines and diverter valves are common failure points.

It's $1295, they claim it's good for 145kw chip alone. Doesn't seem like a huge increase for the dollars to me, I'm fairly uneducated in this regard though.

most chips will do a deal @ $1000... if you're keen. Say you've seen plenty of other chips running this offer and im sure they'd match it.

I'm finding it hard to find info on these chips, APR and BSR seem like the more popular item. So I might contact these companies first.

it's certainly towards the end of it's life. Well designed 4cyl. engine should last 250, 000km. also there are other components that will be quite worn out, like the transmission, the axles and running more torque through them will stress them more then in the cars that done less than 100, 000km or are brand new. Of course you can always rebuild or replace.
But, I'd rather start with a younger car.

6000km left on my A4 Miro I have had dramas with everything around the engine but the motor itself has held up ok.
