You will need to get the blade cut here, $30-60 + the responder chip programmed with vw but it would knock the cost of a spare key down considerably in comparison from VW Direct.
    Just saw this thread: http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/206965/1339035.aspx

apparently you can code the keys using VAG-Tacho and VAG-Com. Wonder if anyone on here has done it before?

It would be cheaper than a remote locking key fob, but it will still have a transponder chip in the key for the immobiliser to recognise, hence the hefty price tags.

My 1st car was a commodore and the transponder chip was inside the key fob itself, so you could get the metal key component cut for $4 at any good key cutter (like the one I used to work at...) and then just buy the key head for $40 and screw the new key into it. Holden charged $90 for a whole new key to be cut, but $40 just for the key head alone..

Except you can start a commodore with a screwdriver, thus kinda defeating the point......

I have obtained a blank programmable key for my MKIV Golf, but am unable to find anywhere that can program it for me. Can anyone recommend somewhere in Melbourne where I can get this done, and how much it will cost to get the key CUT and PROGRAMMED?

    Cheers
