Cam chain tensioner replacement.. not sure if needed..

    Hello,

EDIT: Sorry the title should refer to the gasket for the tensioner.

I usually change things when I know they are gone.

I am about to change my valve cover gasket because I have oil in the spark plug wells when I change the plugs..., and I have read that while I am doing that I should really do the Cam Chain tensioner gasket and half moon as I have the cover off.

Is there a sure fire way to identify if this needs replacing? Or should I just change it anyway? I am procrastinating over changing it as I need to order the gasket and the special VW tool.

    What are peoples experiences.

    Thanks.

This is probably the cheapest price for the special tool. ~$15
Unless someone knows of a cheaper place locally...

And for the gasket... roughly $15 inclusive of shipping.

I would leave them unless they are leaking.

Id do that Gasket and half moon when you do the rocker cover gasket.
Noone ever does and they always leak.

Is a pain in the backside to change both on, and off the car. I'd leave it unless it was leaking...

No worries Matt, I haven't got leaks from mine on the Polo and haven't changed them, in fact I re-used the old ones . Maybe I am just lucky

Although, I did make sure they were spotless and cleaned off the head and tensioner with brake cleaner.
