If you google" VW factories" you will get a list and one of the numbers on the compliance plate will be the same as one of the ones in the list
EG Passaats are built in Emden
I've found the compliance plate in the spare wheel well, which shows my car got its (presumably) Australian compliance plate dated Oct 2003, and there's a separate little metal tag next to it that says Built Date oct/03.
Obviously it takes a month or two to come out on the boat. Where do I find when and where my car was really built, please? I think all mk4 cars for the Aussie market were built in Germany, but I want to be sure.

Whats after WVWZZZ1JZ4?
Is it a U, or a W?
U is South Africa. W is Wolfsberg, Germany.

Mine has a U in it, so it was built in Uitenhage, South Africa. Thanks guys.. Given it was from Sth Africa, it's much more possible that it was built and complianced in the same month, as is indicated by the plates in the boot floor.
Yeah, entirely possible. October is a long month.
Great cars, by the way. Would own another late-build MK4 again in a heartbeat.

Well technically, yeah.
But the wagons we get come only from the Emden plant. I suspect this is a RHD thing.
