Yeah, I'd be doing the brake light switch to start with.
You can get genuine ones off eBay cheap enough through UK dealers.
here's a curly one...
since Thursday night my Golf has picked up a strange habit, it likes to turn it's brake lights on overnight! I'll turn the car off, make sure the brake lights aren't on, go inside, and then at some point during the night the brake light fairy pays me a visit and turns the lights on. Saturday morning I woke up to a completely dead battery
So I'm guessing it's the brake light switch. My questions are:
- Has anyone here had the same issue and changed it themselves?
- Are the eBay switches any good, and if so which one? (there are heaps)
I have found a DIY on vortex but I also found a reference to it on this forum where someone has stated that is uses a superseded switch. Faulty brake light switch...and fix :)
thanks in advance.

Cheers mate! How do I know which ones are actually genuine, compared to people who just include the word "genuine" in the title.
These are the results I'm getting for "golf brake light switch genuine" golf brake light switch genuine | eBay
Never mind, just called VW spare parts, genuine is cheaper and in stock!
Occasionally you'll have a small victory with VW Dealers - worth checking every time if only to rage at their usually inflated prices
I've found they're usually line-ball with online sellers.
Plus you'll never wait anymore than 14 days.
