this looks like a part good enough to whack in there - Volkswagen Jetta IV VR6 24v > Drivetrain > Clutch > OEM > ES#1831913 Clutch Slave Cylinder / Throw-out Bearing - 0A5141671E

can i get an idea of what i should expect for shopcost on this to install?

I cannot tell you for certain, but I believe it is on the stock clutch. At the very least I have not replaced the clutch and I have had her about 20,000kms. she is now 160-odd k kms.

is this something my local mech can do if I source him the parts?

Or is it a job needing some VAG experience to save screwing around (and hence save shop time and cost?).

HA HA... but srsly, if djork doesn't get it, can i have it ?

i'll prob have to cough up 1-1.5k to fix up mine, but i think ultimately worth it (car only has 90k on the clock, and i know i'm going to have this car a while.... definitely don't have the $ for another, especially a sick AWD one)

dyldo--i'd give a few garages a call and just ask them; you'll probably get a pretty clear answer... try calling up CVWC in Belconnen, sure they can give you an idea

Thats good to hear, because you can still use the clutch it means that it doesn't sound like there is an issue with the pressure plate or other parts of the clutch.
I'd first off try with rebleeding the slave. Have you let the master cylinder get low recently? May have some air in the lines and yes the brake and clutch share the master.

not sure on air in the lines, but doubtful as i topped the reservoir to the brim and got 3-4 clutch pumps. by all accounts it sounds like the slave, but of course might also be the master or anything else floating around the bell housing.

In any event it will likely not be over $400 incl parts and labour to fix - assuming it is a slave cyl.

how do you know its the slave? mine isn't fixed yet and it appears that diagnosing it might be the hard bit. could be the clutch breather apparently.

One thing to look for if the clutch pedal goes to the floor and there's no clutch action - if you've got a metal clutch pedal, there's a bit that presses onto the master cylinder that's very prone to breakage. If you've got a plastic clutch pedal then this probably isn't the case, and if filling the brake fluid up got a few more presses, then this isn't it too.

My brother had this go in his 4Mo. I had the very same part go in my VR6. It's also a common failure in TTs that share the same components.

I had the numbnuts at the stealership diagnose a faulty master cylinder when I knew it was just the pedal. They refused to replace just the pedal. I had my pedal welded back up again, and replaced it myself. That was about 5 years ago and the master cylinder is still going strong.

fix it - I have had mine from new 2001 and it still brings a smile - tried to fall out of love but cannot. They are one of the rare cars on the road and a sleeper.I also like the fact they never produced them with an auto, so really separates those who love their driving from the rest.
