just thought i'd revisit this thread. the bora is in cobwebs, i feel so ashamed. i haven't fixed the car but have to get onto it so am deciding (again) on what to do.
Assuming it really IS the slave cylinder, then can't i just drop $150-odd on the part and then get a good shop to fit it? If thats the case, what are we talking about in terms of shoptime and/or cost?

It's a piece of piss to replace anyone with the knowledge of what a socket set is can replace it. Just in a **** of a spot.
What is actually happening in terms of whats going wrong.
the clutch goes down and doesn't come back up. Even if you pull it back with your feet and depress it, it goes straight down with no pedal feel and stays there.
As the clutch and brakes appear to run (hydraulically anyway) off the same reservoir, we topped it up to max and it got me about 3 clutch presses to get me home.
