Huh? Both will have leads running to the plugs. A coil pack will have leads running to a "square" on the side and straight to spark plug. Thr individual coils are on top of the spark plug and should run into a wiring loom.
    Coil pack

Individual coil on the right and normal on the left.

Finally received my ECS shipment and was wondering about ignition coils - if one goes bad will it ALWAYS result in a misfire (therefore a misfire code)? ..or can an ignition coil be "half bad" and sort of work and not cause a misfire, just loss of power without the roughness?

From what I know the ignition coil is either good or bad, no in between symptoms. If so, changing my coils would just be preventative maintenance.. (I did recently have a failed coil but it was replaced with another used one)

Just did some research and found the answer. For those that don't know a coil pack is like a light bulb, either works or doesn't- so no in between (not 110% sure on this though).

In my Google travels I also read up on the MK4 coil pack recalls and that people were still able to get them changed for free by VW dealers in the present time. I called up VW customer service and there were never any recalls for my car =( I'll proceed and change my ignition coils tonight..

There was a service item on the 24v VR6 engine in the US to replace all individual coil packs, but that service item didn't make it to Australia - only the R32 got it here.
    Nothing to see here...
