Any thoughts are appreciated
Hi everyone
I am thinking about replacing the rear standard exhaust (muffler) that sits under the rear boot.
I was thinking an easy choice would be a stainless steel sports muffler, twin three inch pipes which would probably be connected from the cat back. The car has a bmc sports filter plus cold air pod.
My questions:
1. Will it make the exhaust to loud?
2. How might it effect performance?
Thanks
Any thoughts are appreciated
Hi Dave
The volume of the exhaust if your thinking of a cat-back system is up to you, depending on the mufflers for one and the size piping. Are you thinking aftermarket ready made exhaust systems, or getting it custom made by a exhaust specialist?
How a cat-back system affects performance, will be in most case, minimal gain. It's more about the note really.
I got my exhaust custom made, with 2 and a quater inch piping from cat, into a hot dog resonator and a rear muffler into dual jet pipes. Both the mufflers are SuperCat.
It's not overly loud, but the VR6 sounds bloody amazing with a decent exhaust
I'll hopefully get a video of mine up soon, maybe tommorrow actually, if you want to hear it

That's exactly what I would probably want to do. Off the shelf exhaust as all I am chasing is a slightly deeper/louder exhaust note.
I would be keen to hear how your car sounds
How much did this set up cost you approximately?
Thanks mate
I've had 3 different exhausts on my 4motion and i've got to say the loudness will depend very much on your muffler choice and the depth will depend on your resonator choices. Personally i think 2.25" is too small especially considering the factory system is 2.5". I actually lost 12kw at the wheels when i was running my 2.25" (press bent) exhaust!
My opinion if you want a quiet exhaust with a nice note get a 2.5" mandrel bent system with a good quality magnaflow offset rear muffler and a good quality mid muffler. You might need a resonator if it rasps but i've found the mid muffler generally does a good job at taking car of any rasping. The magnaflow mufflers in my opinion are very good at keeping noise down and give a good note.
Performance wise, witha good exhaust you'll gain some power, my car definitely felt less restricted in the top end once i changed the exhaust to a full 2.5" mandrel system. This system was a 2.5" system with 2 oval supercat mufflers and 2 hotdog resonators, it was a bit too deep and a touch boomy for my liking but this could've been fixed by removing a resonator or two.
Dave, as long as you have a resonator you will be fine. There are a few threads on here regarding custom duel systems some of them made with r32 catback with valve, including my own.
My favourite for all round driving was to have resonator on and r32 muffler open with the resonator offf it was quite loud but I loved it
Sorry I dont know where my other vids are, I had better ones.
