    You sure?

I thought RDA were made in China, Vs. DBA made local in silverwater??? hence the price difference. RDA don't advertise kangaroo paw vent design also?

Have heard more praise for DBA than RDA, searching google seems to come up with RDA rotors not lasting as long.

    sump coming off soon...

ok so as to start trying things out before I fork out for new lifters and peel the top of the engine off.

    • Ive got me some castrol edge 5w 30 ( k-mart sylvania $50.99)
    • Ill grab a ryco oil filter.
    • the "special" VW sump tool i think is just a hex socket which might need an extension.
    • ill also need the special gasket sealer...
    • cleaning agent to clean the sump sealing surface and rubber gloves. any ideas?

as far as the Sump sealant compound goes.. whats a good alternative to VW's stuff? loctite maybe?
also anything else I need to clean the strainer?
should I chuck in some of the Nulon lifter ticking fixer when i pour in the new oil?

    Work Continues...

Just an update on the work being carried out.

At the moment the car is on stands and Im waiting on parts ( any day now)

Snowy has sold me his shocks.... and they are half installed. waiting on bearings and rubbers for upfront before they go in. Never realised how much of a bastard shocks are to pull out and put in (front) without the right spreader tool.

ANYHOW... ive got it down to a fine art and i can remove them in and install them in about 30 mins or so. Car failed rego due to drivers side front strut leaking, so i had to also spend a while cleaning the grit and oil and caked on build up due to this.

Ive got a Novus coming in to do a windscreen replacement, due tomorrow or the next day. ( still to finalize time)

Since posting here last time the lifters went from a slight tapping to a heavy metallic banging. not good. so Im going to pull the top off inspect what kind of damage that did and then replace the lifters. hopefully wednesday or thursday for this task. Funny thing was that after it started making the worst noise in the world... i left it for 2 days and the noise subsided and went to tapping again. I guess the hydro lifter bled down. will know from inspection i guess how bad things are.

theres only one thing for sure at the moment... the car is a cleaner than it has been for a long time. When this is over I might take it to a panel shop to touch up the scratches and bumps. and then a detail. Maybe even a shampoo / steam clean or something on the inside.

    Update

Thanks to Snowy and his old suspension. I know it doesnt sound so crash hot BUT after installing them and driving up to get rego, youd swear it was a different car. Which might give you an indication of how bad a shape this car is. If anyone wants to try to do suspension themselves... make sure you have a GOOD tool to use to spread the strut brace. Otherwise you'll be messing around aimlessly for hours. this is very important hey.

So far the changes i have made are...

    • replaced Fuel Filter
    • replaced Air Filter
    • replaced Suspension with new bearings and mounts.
    • replaced Tie Rod ends

    things yet to replace

    • windscreen
    • Timing belt w/tensioner
    • serpentine belt
    • water pump
    • thermostat
    • Lifters
    • dogbone mount ( what the hell, might stop the shakes we got going on )
    • ball joints
    • controller arm bushings
    • brakes ( discs and pads )
    • wipers

    More to come soon.

Good to hear mate. That suspension was taken out just after my car's first service 15000km (On smooth Canberra roads), so I reckon you'd be back to feeling like a new car again.

As a matter of interest, did they also car lower a bit?

i didnt notice the car being lower at all.. actually it felt as if the front was jacked up and sitting on a pillow.... was nice!!!

its amazing what fluid in your shocks does for ride comfort and not having them leak is a plus too. hahaha...

If you havn't already, just bar it over with a breaker bar to make sure nothing is contacting in the engine...This could save you some heart ache.

well one thing is for certain...

i started the engine this morning..

and it all seemed ok. wel all the problems with the ticking and the noise I had and at one point the car was running on 3 cylinders... well they are all gone...

but the main problem I have at the moment is a loud hissing from somewhere near the 1st sparkplug on the right..

Good to see that things are getting along somewhat ok...Is the hissing happening only when its running, or dose it continue after the car is switched off??
