    magnatec is a semi-synthetic 10w40.

Rather than putting ATF through the motor, there's a nulon product designed to unblock lifter vents which cause the ticking. Might be worth a shot?

Running any 40 grade oil should be fine for that motor, so long as has been regularly serviced in the past, and even then if it hasn't, mobil 1 5w50 is a thicker oil, should be fine if motor's a bit worn. if in good condition, a full synthetic 5w30 oil is recommended for these motors from castrol.

Sorry guys, had to tend to some house duties last night.

I guess the noisey lifters is kind of moving into an area that Im not completely familiar with. but theres nothing that I wont give a go. Theres no other way of learning. Other than saying that... Id rather leave cover on the engine until im completely sure that I need to pull it off.

So I guess, first things first, clean?!? tthe oil strainer, try the Nulon product and a castrol 5w 30?!?! then see how the noise goes from there.

I still have the list but Ill put that aside till I give this a try.

I was just reading up on the DBA rotors, they dont seem to be all that bad hey.

No worries. I have used them on previous cars, and have nothing bad to say about them.

I would seriously consider going to see a mechanic for the work you have on. This may save some heartache in the long run.

    thanks....

ive been looking at the rda and dba rotors like you suggested.

rda are much cheaper all round. what do you reckon? worth the investment in getting dba's? or do you think the wife wouldnt notice the difference and I should get something like the rda's?

I don't think she would notice it either way...Both these brands can be bought at Super Cheap or Auto Barn.

    OIL Strainer

done, RDA rotors from autobahn. LOCKED in my List.
315.30 for the rotors. (front and back)

Do you mind if I ask about the OIL strainer? I'd never heard of it before today

with the 04 Bora. is there anything I need to be aware when checking/cleaning it?
Im going to give this a go in the next couple of days.

Oil strainer is where the oil pump picks up from in the sump. To clean the strainer, you are going to have to pull the sump pan off. Being a front wheel drive car, you may have to/will have to pull off the sub frame(will have to clarify this) to access the sump. When you pull of the sump, it is strongly suggested toy replace the sump gasket too(well, I would do this, others may say otherwise).
Personally, I would do this on a Hoist, as this can be a prick of a job. You may also need specialist tools too.
In my honest opinion, if you have little or no mechanical experience, I wouldn't even try to attempt this job at home. Its up to you though. Saving money in the short term may not save you money in the long term. Good luck.

Yep you need a VW socket - 3249 or T10058. by the looks of it they arent readily available.

also Volkswagen recommends using special silicone sealant Compound
    D 176404 A2.

    hmmm....
