Bora fuel tank only filling to halfway

I cannot get more than half a tank into the Bora fuel tank, and thought i'd post here for answers.

I've had the car only for about 4 tanks now and each time i only fill to when the nozzle shuts off, and then thats it i put the nozzle back and i am full. The last 3 tanks however i can only always get in half a tank and it shuts off. Judging by the KMs i got when it first happened, i definitely know its not a gauge issue and must somehow be a gas or venting issue.

On one hand its good cause i save carting around the other half of the fuel, but of course its getting to be a big PITA. I just wanna have a full tank, is it too much to ask?

    Anyone have any ideas?

Mine fills OK, takes and alarming amount to fill it compared to my MK1s . I don't recall any issues with filling.

Perhaps just pull the nozzle back out a bit when filling?

So, in theory you're not getting the full 55L, or whaterver it is, in?

Fistly, you need to establish that when the guage says empty, it is in fact close to empty.

have tried everything with the nozzle, no dice.

as far as being empty, she sure is empty when she says she is. thats for sure.

not a gauge issue i am quite sure, and now i think its a coincidence of blocked tank venting lines?

I find with mine that it is quite susceptible to the angle that the car is sitting. If the car is slightly tilting towards the filling side it is harder to fill and I get that kicking back happening at about half a tank. However if the driveway is sloping the other way so that the car is tilting the other way ie the filling side is slightly higher then I don't have the problem.

However I was advised by a mate to hold the filler at about a 45 degree angle which I found worked. (I do it by turning the hose end clock wise)

Given all that it is only occasionally that I have had the problem. The other day I put 65 litres in according to the bowser without any problems. I did have to go 3 or 4 times after the first click though (at about 63 litres). I can't help feeling a bit ripped off at that service station though as according to the manual the Bora only has a 62 litre tank!

my brother's '99 GTI has the opposite problem, fills up fine but the guage never shows more than halfway

anyhoo, maybe the way u filled ur old car wont work as well filling ur new car ..all i can say is make sure u leave a gap around the nozzle for the vapor to escape the tank coz if u shove the nozzle right in and have the rubber handle surrounded flush with the tank itll be the vapor that triggers the shutoff.

...if that fails, open the tank and strike a match, thats sure clear any blockages lol

I managed to get 63L in the other day, without really trying too hard. I guess I ran it close to empty...

I sometimes have the same drama with mine depending on the pump, but as already mentioned if you hold the nozzle at a slight angle it fills with no problems at all

Well, after a good dozen or so tanks the issue is back, and it brought a friend.

This morning I noticed my car was about 80% full - a pleasant surprise But then I noticed the trip was showing about 540kms. Now, I religiously reset both my ODO trip and my MFD trip on each tank fill, because I just don't trust gauges and judge my tank on distance travelled. So thats my verification for the tank being definitely closer to empty that what the gauge was showing.

So after driving a good 100kms or so I did notice the gauge dropping to where it shoudl be (by now close to empty, and sure enough just before my servo the fuel light comes on) but when I go to fill up I get 40L in and it keeps shutting off. I spend a frustrating 5 minutes drip-feeding another 1.5L in and think "bugger it" and go inside and pay. Sure enough the gauge shows about 2/3 Full which confirms for me:-
    1) A sometimes sodgy fuel gauge now
    2) More importantly, there must be an issue with my fuel tank's filler neck or the baffles are blocked in the tank and it isn't dispersing the fuel properly.

    Any new thoughts folks?
