The tensioner has a spring and runs off oil pressure .
The oil pump has a spring and bucket which limits oil pressure
The oil pump spring loses its ability to work against engine oil pressure and the car starts running higher oil pressure
Higher oil pressure means the tensioner is pushed harder on the plastic guides which in turn put more pressure on the chains thus wearing the guides quicker .
