I was about 160km from home when the gear stick went all floppy between 3rd and 4th and the transmission ended in neutral. Coasted to a stop, found 4th and got home like that.
The plastic grommet on the end of the gear selector cable has failed (gear stick end), this let the cable come free from the stick. The steel cable end ring is big enough without the grommet to pass over the retaining circlip. I picked up the fragged plastic part from the bottom of the gear selector housing after removing the console.
The plastic grommet is part of the gear selector cable (not a separate part) so looks like I've got a cable job ahead of me to get the car going again. Good time to update the cable ends and bushings I guess.
I've got the Bentley manual, ELSAWIN etc although specifics for Bora 4Motion are limited at best. I've climbed underneath to have a look at what's necessary to remove the gear selector housing, it's not a simple job like a haldex controller replacement. I've started on a parts list, the local dealer's parts lady is fantastic.
Anyone got tips for new players on this job?
