Easy to tell the 12v and 24v Boras apart, does the engine have spark plug leads running to one place, or coil packs on each plug. The coil pack ones are the 24 valve.

I have a 2001 Bora VR6 that has engine code AUE. I have been told by VW is a 24V based on their check of the VIN... I am looking to get replacement hoses for the cooling system that has several leaks but, sadly, VW no longer make these parts, other than 1 of the hoses and 2 of the couplers. Been looking at some of the US aftermarket part sites (ECS Tuning and UroTuning) they seem to demarcate the 24V to 2002+ builds for the Bora!! I was hoping someone would be able to clear up whether Boras delivered to Australia in early 2001 are MY02 with the 24V so I buy the right hose kit?? Cheers Davo

Thanks for that info MIG. Getting the info from a VW spare parts dept that the engine is a 24V based in the VIN has thrown me. The engine definitely has a single coil pack on the passenger side of the head... so a 12V. The books have original owner taking delivery in late July 2001.
I have a digital copy of a 1999-2005 service manual for Gold / Bora put out by Bentley Publishing. Looks like a US publication. This manual mentions only 2.8L engine codes of AFP (12V) and BDF (24V) - no mention of the AUE code that I have. Would there have been different engine codes for AU and US markets??

Hmmm my info might be wrong here, I just looked up the AUE and it does look to be a 24v, AQP and AUE look to share a lot of parts.

A quick update: I just had a bit of a look under the bonnet of the Bora and was trying to work out the arrangement of the cooling hoses from system diagrams for both the MK4 VR6 engines with codes AUE and BDE (from volkswagen.7zap.com). There are cooling system components (rubber hoses and hard pipes) from the heater core that match those shown in the BDE diagram, but the engine is AUE. I might just be dealing with a Frankenstein verkurzt reihenmotor that has been fitted with a mix-match of parts here!!

To my knowledge majority of the cooling components, couplings hoses etc.. from the AUE, AQN (2.3 V5) and BDE are the same or at least cross compatible. The R32 also shares some of the same. I was using 7zap for a long time but found they did not keep it up to date when part numbers were superseded.

Sometimes what I'll do is get a part number from ilcats.ru (take a look at the link above, referring #8 part number 1J0122051AE)
Then take that part number and run it through Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat OEM & VAG parts | oemVWshop
oemvwshop will show you that part is NLA has now been superseded by 1J0122051AF which is available.
Another good tip is look at the first 3 digits of a part number. 1J0 tells you where the part originates from (E.g. Golf/Bora LHD/RHD)
If you see 3B0 (e.g. Passat LHD/RHD), 8N0 (e.g. Audi TT MK1 8N) etc..
Sometimes it's easier to find a Passat hose then a Bora AUE hose. Make sense?
My advice - ditch the AUE, parts specific to it are almost impossible to find globally as it was a bit of a transition motor from the old 12V's (AAA) to later ones (BDE/BML) and was only used between 2000 - 2002.
Thanks for the link to that parts site - definitely will be a useful resource, especially if it is more up-to-date. I couldn't see the reference to the superseded part number for that example you posted though??
I am leaning towards buying a full silicon hose kit from ECS Tuning for the US Jetta 24V VR6 and hope that I get as many compatible hoses as possible to eliminate leaky rubber.
You are also not the first person who has recommended getting a later engine! MKV R32 engine swap? Not sure I could contemplate that kind of project...
