18's will also make the ride quite harsh due to the lower profile tyre not able to absorb as many bumps...
I only had the stockies on for a while with the KWs but from memory it was pretty bouncy but not as harsh. Now I can hear the coins in my coin drawer being rattled every time I go over a slight bump. I'm putting my stockies back on soon anyways before I take my car back to the dealer so I'll give you more details then.

Sometimes it feels like I'm in my 180sx again with its knackered coilovers smashing over every bump in the road...

Firmer than stock, but definitely not what I would consider uncomfortable. You must realise that everything is a balance/compromise. If you want better handling, you will have a firmer ride. I consider the V1s or Hicon GTs to be the best compromise.

As for lowering, the spring doesn't get anymore compressed.
However, the shock will be working in a different part of the shock body which can significantly change handling / feeling.
That's not entirely true. If you have them wound up to a point that the spring is pre-loaded, the ride will be harsher. If you lower the car, it will soften up.

Another thing that I tell people is to give the dampers about 2,000 km to bed in. If you think they are a little firm brand new, let them settle and then make your decision.

I went for a ride in Pierre's old red Mk4 GTI when he still had it, and it was low. The ride in it was quite good, and that was tucking 19s with KW V3s (which are firmer than the V1/2s).

At the end of the day, they ride a lot better than stock dampers with King Springs....

So lowering would soften it up a bit? That's what I was told years ago when I had to get a roadie for a car that was too low but suspension was too firm. Mechanic said raising the car would get it at the right height, but would make it way too stiff... (although I can't get my head around the physics of this for some reason.)

Yeah I forgot to mention I've only had my coilovers on for a couple of weeks so they haven't settled properly. I just went for a ride before and I remember when I had the stockies on I was impressed with how smooth the ride was. It was the same smooth Bora that I had from the start, but handled better. The 18s do make a huge difference though and I can feel heaps more bumps, but hey you gotta suffer for looks sometimes. Also I only have the front 18s on at the moment so it'll get worse with the rears too!
