Would that explain why it would open but not lock? Might run a wire from the battery directly to the unit as a test and see how i go!

All I can suggest is buying a new PCB from eBay or similar. Like this one? You could try programming the new PCB to your system, and if that doesn't work, transfer its buttons to your existing PCB (if you're handy with a soldering iron...).

Man I wish I was more useful with electrical stuff.

I had same unit in my VW Golf MK3 VR6.
Bought from VW dealer in Brisbane more than 5 years ago and still working with NO issue.
    R36 > MK5 2006 1.9 TDI > MK4 2003 1.6 Generation > MK3 1995 2.8 VR6 > MK2 1990 1.6 > MK1 1982 1.8 GTI

    Some further vw mk4 questions....

Your post it's was very helpful to me to fix my alarm... Thanks!!
Would you, by chance, know how to get a passenger door out of safe mode? The button moves with the key and inside handle, but never gets to unlock.
I'd pull the door apart to resolder the broken cold joints in the actuator if I could only open the damn thing...

    Thanks for any help here.
