Question Any other early Mk4s here with Cobra keyless entry remotes?

My mid '99 Golf GTI came with a goofy looking Cobra 7777 keyless entry remote, exactly like this one:

I changed the battery, and now it doesn't work. Apparently I left the battery out for too long and the remote has un-programmed itself. The LED on the remote comes on when I hit the button, but no lock-unlock. I've Googled the universal programming procedures for the Cobra 7777 and none of them have worked.

Does anyone else have this system? Does anyone know where I might find the actual module in the car that the remote communicates with? If I can identify the actual system I might be able to find the right info. Cheers.

Probably poorly fastened up under the dash on the driver's side, like every other aftermarket security system.

Should be easy to spot, because it'll be the only module under there that looks like it's not meant to be there.

This is the Votex keyless upgrage they made exclusively for VW , the module was normally fitted inside the drivers door and ustilised the green and grey central locking wires coming from the lock module. Any we fitted went there, made it heaps easy to fit and terminate
    See how you go

Cheers mate. Found it - behind the panels under the steering column.

For future reference, it says "Votex Gmbh, 4M1046V1C, e3, 12V Type 1046, Delta Elettronica" and it's cable tied just below the instrument cluster. View from below:

Also I think I've found the user manual, in case anyone is looking for it in future: Link, & alternate.

It looks like a dealer install. I guess this was the solution for pre-CANBUS cars.

Yep dealer fit, unusual to see it under steering though, most were in the door, at least you found it . Yeah Votex made these for golfs, and they made microwave types for Passats and Golf Convertibles.

Interesting. The reprogramming process described in the manual worked, but it only when I turned the ignition on.

Anyway, I'm glad to have my remote back! No more getting soaked in the rain while fumbling with the key.

    Cheers

    Hi Guys,

I pretty much have the same problem. Over the past few years i have had 3 of these Vortex units replaced as the mechanics thought that was the problem, however a few months later it would happen again. Issue is that the key fob WILL open the car, but WONT lock it so i have not bothered with it for ages. After getting sick of using the key (lazy i know) i have decided to try fix it. Re-synced the key using the manual provided and once again it opens and wont lock, but weirdly when the ignition is on it will open and close with the remote, which is not much use to me to lock the car while the ignition is on!!!

Any suggestions on what may be wrong? i dont believe it is the Vortex unit anylonger as it does work (with the ignition on) but just doesn't lock!!

    Cheers, Ev.

Sounds like its a power issue. It may be getting switched acc power when it needs a constant.

i actually have one of these units ready to retrofit into my car - is there a "more right" way of doing it?
