I am very confident against ANY Golf ...Including R badges out there ..

Thats a big call considering you dont know all the Golfs out there and unless you have a gt28 you'll struggle against some cars

When I worked at the race team we spend forever changing filters and airboxes and came down to the conclusion that at higher rpm the stock airbox flowed the most , the only thing it required was a larger intake into the air box . Some sounded great but its not sound that wins you races but a combination of power and torque ! My own S3 still runs a stock airbox , and afaik its the most powerful standard ecu (not running stand alone) 1.8t in the country .

So if your n/a , buy some cam(s) and if your forced induction , change the turbo , cause once your chipped , thats thats where your next substancial gains will come from

Hmm, good point you make bug racer.....Essentially that's what i am trying to get my head around at the minute, how to get the coldest air from the point of highest air pressure, in other words, where the stock intake initially draws it's air.

I would hope a company as big and rich as VW would spend some time in R&D for the airbox, especially when you consider they own all or have a substantial share in Audi, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley to name a few.....

That is exactly what I was trying to say but my post was for some reason "off topic" ...

No reason to butcher the air intake, won't give you much; exhaust, maybe, cams, maybe , but not much in the intake.

    Cheers

I'm pretty happy with the way my intake is set up now with the EVOMS and the Stage 2 cold air delivery. Taking into account the points raised by other posters I can confirm my setup gives me the following:

    1. Does not require ANY modification to the stock box. The stock box can simply be re-installed at any time. My stock box is safely stored in a cabinet in my garage in the same state as when it came out of the VW factory .

    2. Provides a large 6" High Quality Filter and matched Venturi intake into the MAF (Twice the diameter of stock). Not only does this increase the speed of the airflow entering the turbo pipe due to the proven airflow physics of the Venturi effect, but also conforms with Bug Racer's observation that increasing entry area (in my case doubling the diameter) to the stock intake is advantageous. So this setup gives me an increase in the speed AND volume of air. This is an important aspect of the design of the V-Flow that many overlook.

    3. At speed, pressurised cold air is being collected and directed into the filter housing from a high pressure area at the lower grill vent. On a cold Canberra day, after spirited driving, I have checked the surface of the Filter element and housing and they are literally ice cold to touch when the rest of the engine bay is hot, indicating there is a good volume of cold air being pushed up there to keep those components at such a noticably cold temp in such a hot environment.

    4. Has a low chance of hydro-lock as there is an air gap between the hose entry to the filter housing and the filter element that a big "cupful" of water would have to jump across.

Pretty good compromise of the most importance points I'd say, while delivering any possible benefits there are to be had from intake modding.

On the VW air intake R&D comment made by one poster, well Porsche are pretty good at building high performance engines and probably spend a lot more time and effort on squeezing performance from their intakes than VW does for the Golf intake, but the EVOMS V-Flow design is widely recognised in the Porsche community as a very worthwhile upgrade to their factory intakes.

    Cheers,

Nice description man, your points raised are all totally understandable and make enough sense for me to want to do it...
