The reason for this is "risk of fire".

As stated, a pod filter is not illegal, it just falls under certain guidelines. The reason peoples MAF's die with pod filters is that by using an oiled filter, they over oil it and the MAF gets drowned in the oil, making it die.

Though speak to some people (myself included) and they will tell you that pods and oiled filters in general are a waste of money

My question here is... all CAIs seem to use an oiled filter anyway - so why would they not ruin the MAF as much as a POD anyway....? They still have oil.

You don't have to run an oiled filter, companies like AEM make dry filter equivalents. Evolution Motorsports also offer a dry filter alternative for customers concerned about it.

Simota make a CAI with a POD filter (non oil) for our cars, mine is ordered and on it,s way. Their's places the filter at the opening in the bumper on the passenger side to allow for an unrestricted and cooler air intake. We're lucky over here as cats can be removed from exhaust sytems as well.

I run a pod filter on a neuspeed CAI. Technically speaking it's not in the engine bay as it is routed down into the passenger side arch that is sealed away from the engine bay. The rest is all secured and bolted up.

I have made every attempt to ensure it is legal but if you get the wrong person on the wrong day I'm sure they will disagree. In the mean time I'll carry on listening to what sounds like darth vader with a cold.

As it has been stated a few times in this thread, placing the air filter down there at the front of the car can expose it to more water than up in the engine bay if you go through large enough puddles, leading to hydrolocking your engine, but im sure no drives through floods in a golf

This is hearsay and crap...There is NO proof to this....I have run K&N and BMC oiled filters on all of my cars and never had a problem, and have NEVER heard about it being an issue until I joined this forum, but of the people how come up with this stuff about buggered MAF sensors, NONE have come up with any proof to say it was the filter oil that killed it, and NONE have taken up the issue with K&N, or any other oiled filter manufacturer. Tell me, alot of the time, where dose the crank case breather hose exit in front of? Do you have conclusive proof that filter oil wrecks Mass Airflow Sensors(MAF"s).

But it'd look bad I'm not game to try that just yet. Might do it a little bit more precisely with a 3" hole and a second intake pipe for the box, silicon it up, and make it look pro
