Air filters
hey guys
will air intake, breather, cold air intakes or pod filters do anything to my fuel consumption?
whats the difference?
Whats the best one to get?
thanks george

You'll get slightly better power, as you're getting more air, and your engine will adapt to that (via the readings taken from the MAF) and will add more fuel for the air you're getting.
Thus, your economy may actually drop.
What's best to get? Hard to say. Any change away from the OEM setup should technically be engineered - you're not allowed to run an unenclosed filter of any kind (an engineer won't pass it) due to emissions regulations, so you'd need an enclosed cold air intake to remain legal and roadworthy.
Open pod filters (as well as being non-legal) give noise and make the car sound better, but unless you have it where it can suck in good cold air, it'll actually be worse (hot air from near your engine will give you less power). It is of course possible to put a pod somewhere useful (down in the front bumper for instance), but then you need to be careful of sucking water into it should you drive through a deep puddle - ingested water tends to lead to broken engines.
Having an ECU reflash may help, as the flash tunes tend to run a little leaner (factory tunes are quite rich to avoid pre-detonation when running under poor conditions).

I had a POD filter for about 3 months and it blew the AFM. Now i have a neuspeed CAI and the K&N POD that sits in the bumper. Sounds great, consumption went down about a litre, more power and more responsive. Its been on the car for about 2.5 years and hasnt caused any issues. You have to be careful with puddles tho. Well worth the money

They do make a difference, just not as much as a pod filter would. I plan to get a K&N for mine at some point, have had one in a previous car and it was noticable. They are just a bit less restrictive compared to disposable filters and of course you can clean and re-use them.
