heres a link with some more information, generally points to oiled filters posing no harm to our poor MAF sensors, although i highly doubt that K&N would make such an effort with test results saying that their filters are crap...

Really K&N units are not worth it in my opinion - the stock unit is pretty large and I doubt any restriction to flow.
I've had a K&N on a turbo car and for the cost the gain is nil or close to nil.

I've had the K&N panel filter in my GTI for 8 months or so.
I had to clean the MAF after a couple of weeks using some alcohol because it got some of the filter oil on it (basically i noticed the fuel consumption got a bit worse after a few days or so), but i think that's just a teething problem. I guess they must be pretty heavily oiled from the factory sometimes, and it takes a bit of time for the excess oil to work its way off the filter.
