When did governance, regulations and social responsibility come into tuning?
It all depends really . . . Do you want your wheels to be legal?

in auburn lol.
my 2 psi on this matter is.
i ran spacers on the rear (20mm which bolted onto hub, and wheel onto spacer) for close to 2 years almost, 10 and 12mm on the fronts (no not left 10, right 12.. lol) and ive been pulled up many of times for rbts and so forth for infringements (eek!). ive never had an issue, however i did spray them black to match the hub.
all spacers or adapters you buy make sure 100% they are TUV approved, any TUV approval superceeds australian standards anyhow so you know youll be safe. however yes they arent completely legal until you get an engineers certif which is big $$ usually unless you know the right people.
problem with adapters you need to be VERY sure or make sure you find someone who prev had or has the same style offset or wheels so you can be sure to get the right spacers/adapters you'll be needing to fit whatever wheel that is you choose.
my recommendation is to get on vwvortex and search there, EVERYTHING has been done to a Golf on that site. If not ... german sites.
See how you go and what you like, you can always import wheels quite cheaply these days or have a look around. If your in Sydney throw me a PM and i can recommend a few places who will look after you. (this applies to everyone)
What’s behind you doesn’t matter..
