great so far!
3 years ago it cost me roughly 950 for the wave trac delivered from intergrated engineering. + 90ish for arp diff bolt kit and around $250 to have it installed from hart transmission brendale. Which includes drilling out the old rivets to fasten the old crown wheel to the new diff, and I had to get the cable shifter swapped over from my old gearbox to the new one as well. So I think it ended up costing around the $1200 -$1300 mark. Well worth it though it drives completely different. You will have loads more confidence when cornering!

Looks good, have you considered a stroker kit?

Excellent. I'll be watching
MK4 GTI - Sold
MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.
So since no-one else has added any technical info I thought Id be the first . The amount of people who have actually done anything more than a ko4 to the mk4 in Aus is a handful at best . Most have done just bolt ons . So anyway here is my take on it :
If you want 350 hp dead even then the turbo to use would be a gt28rs . That would give you in the vicinity of about 180-200kw atws .
If your willing to get 320hp then you could look at getting a ko4 off an S3/TT , that will give you around the 170-180kw atws mark .
If you want more then your best to look at gtx2871r size turbo .
With tuning anything bigger than ko4 your better off going stand alone . Ive been down this path so many times getting AEB/AGU's tuned with ko4's and bigger and its a headache and stand alone is quicker , easier and safer . The only drawback is its a bit more expensive .
As for the engine if your only doing a ko4/gt28rs you just need to do rods and a good set of rings . Anymore you should do pistons . Stroker kit Id do more if you want torque and have the $ to do it .
Oh , and forget about Unitronic . you got more chance of winning something at the pokies than getting a tune off them that is solid and doesnt need tweaking . Not to mention once you pay them , they will dissapear and you wont get through to them ever again ....

Hey mate, thanks for the info. That's perfect! backs up just about everything I've read on turbo upgrade for the 1.8t.
"If you want 350 hp dead even then the turbo to use would be a gt28rs . That would give you in the vicinity of about 180-200kw "
I'm assuming you mean 300hp dead even. I've put 350 down as just a rough goal.. I'd be happy from around 230+kws so I'm thinking the 2871 would be a pretty good choice. More in its efficiency anyways. I'd be stoked with more and I guess that will all depend on future modifications of the engine.
I really wanna do pistons just in case, I mean there only around $650 more. I think that's pretty cheap considering the rods are only 400-500. Plus I guess if I'm really gonna strip this bad boy down and rebuild it.. I might as well Built it right. But was in two minds about the stock piston thing. Maybe ceramic coating could be a nice compromise or a waste of money on a stock piston?
I looked at the stroker kit, I love the concept.. But I love the fact this engine is only 1.8lts and they haul arse for there displacement.
I should have some parts arrive Monday still deciding on pistons. Is agu 9.5: 1 or 8.5:1 . I'd probably just got stock.. Bore size and compression. Unless there huge gain to be had for changing this and cost effect enough.
I'm going to pull the head off the block over the weekend and see what everything looks like inside.. I'll keep you all posted.. Hopefully with better photos this time

atws means at the wheels , so its a dyno measurement so you can compare it to other cars .
If your gonna spend $1k on pistons and rods , why not spend about 700 or so more for a stroker crank . 1.8t 20v 2.0L Stroker Kit (06a)
If you wanted to go higher comp its do-able , as long as your intercooler is super efficient .
If you havent ordered from IE yet email me and I'll give a price on everything you need . Ive dont a few of these 1.8t engines now and a couple of strokers so I'll know exactly what you should change

Okay so im still waiting on my head bolt tool to arrive so i did not get a chance to take the head off but i went as far as i could before i have to take the head off.. so here is some photos of my progression so far..
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This makes me wanna cry... are they buggered?? Ive read mixed opinions on rusty cams.. some people say throw them away and get new ones. and others say take to it with some very fine sand paper.. or wd40 and a rag. the list goes on. i had a go and gave them a light, one directional scrub with a light Brillo pad and some lubrication.. i didn't wanna over work them, but there still some residual staining. Feels smooth to the touch to most parts and some are still a little rough.
I am aware that if these are still okay, that they will probably require a micro polish. If all else fails i'll pull the cams out of my AGU thats already in the car when i do the swap over.
on with the strip down..
And today when i arrived home..............
The first wave of parts arive ))
