Yep illegal to cut the shelf.
Better to get some spacers to lift the speaker.
Personally I'd just upgrade stock stuff
Hi all,
I've got a nice pair of JBL Power Series 6X9s which I'm about to take out of my old Audi A4 and would love them in my 4Motion.
Cutting rear metal parcel shelf is probably the only way, easy enough, illegal I'm sure, any thoughts?

The thought crossed my mind but I'm thinking that the bass would be reduced a lot.
In the A4 I first installed them in the 6 inch factory cutouts with spacers which didn't allow much air around the speaker or for the underside of them to hang down into the boot cavity much at all. I couldn't work out why hardly any bass and a really poor sound. I was advised that they need some air around them so I cut the parcel shelf and installed them flush without any spacers and that bought them properly alive, nice thumping bass from then on.
Upgrading the stock yes probably is the sensible way, i'm still tempted to cut the shelf though, very actually ::))

Don't cut through the parcel shelf. Seriously. If a mechanic finds that you have cut the shelf, you will not pass roadworthy and it will need to be fixed by a panel beater and signed off by an engineer who both will charge a fortune.
I'm not sure why you're so keen on using 6x9's anyway. They try do to everything and really are good at nothing.
They're only prodominately for entry level systems for those that do not want to spend the time and money to install a 2 or 3 way speaker system.
Why not just install a dedicated sub? I have never heard a 6x9 speaker even remotely compare to the bass a sub can put out. Even a 8" in a small box would be heaps better than a 6x9 on a parcel shelf.
