Lightbulb 4spd to 5 spd, is it possible??

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering. In light of the 4 spd auto trans failing in my 2001 Golf, I was wondering if that can be replaced with a 5 spd auto? What issues may I come across or is it just a case of taking out the 4 spd auto and bolting on a 5 spd auto and drive away?

    Any thoughts???

    Regards
    Steve

What car do you plan to get the 5spd auto from?
If not a mk4 the list could be endless

Pretty sure MK4 Golf Auto's are all 4sp. HOWEVER to keep in the same generation a 5sp from a V5 Bora should bolt up easy enough. Only thing I could think of you may need to do is program the ECU with the appropriate gearbox code.

Did they do a 5spd auto on the v5...? Thought they were all 4.
Bell housing on the 5cyl is based on the 6cyl cars so won't directly bolt on to a 4cyl petrol, would need to change or adapter that too

    From 2002 - 2005 the V5's were a 5sp Sports Auto.

Dylan is spot on about the bell housing too... Knew I shouldn't have commented on things that aren't VR's...

There ya go! Wonder what was in stus wagon, I'll have to go back and check.

Ha I only know because gearboxes are an on going hunt for both my cars. Vento has gone from 4spd auto, 5spd, short ratio 5spd, now I want a 6spd with short ratio and long 6th

Something thirsty would be my guess...

To avoid the use of an adapter would a 5sp Sports Auto from a 1.8T Passat be a better option?

Passats are mounted the other way so not sure if the gearboxes are even close to a mk4 style
