    Question 4mo misfire issues

    Hi Guys,
    My 2001 4mo has a misfire issue i cant get to the bottom of...

    Removed all 6 plugs and found that plugs 2,4 and 6 all had worn to gaps of around 2.2mm, plugs 1,3,and 5 were the normal 1.1mm ??
    Found it odd that its on one bank of cylinders.

    Installed new Bosch platinum plugs today, improved likely because of a constant gap, but still has misfire.
    I was suspecting coilpack but was told wastage spark coil system shouldnt fail/fire in that order of cylinders. (rectangle block shape coil, not the individual type)

    Any advive would be great,

    Were they platinum plugs? I wonder if a std plug has been fitted at sometime.

    Ford in the UK used to rotate the plugs in ZETEC motors due to the wasted spark thing.

    The plugs i removed were an NGK (VW/AUDI logo's) Part No. PZFR5D-11.

    They'll be the right ones then. I wonder if some tight wad has only changed 3 for some reason.

    Anyway, solutions not problems. Have you had the car scanned with VAG-COM?
    That might give more clues. There are other engine sensors that may cause the miss.

    Car was fully maintained by camberwell VW, cant see why they would leave 3 out, like you say solutions not problems, i had a VAG-COM scan done (not at VW dealer) cyl. 2,4 and 6 misfire came up, feedback was not a pinpoint solution to fault, more or less guesswork, could be this could be that blah..
    Although its worth getting it scanned again, since the new plugs went in today,

    I'd be driving it for a day or 2 before another scan in case it clears up. An Italian tune up might go down well.

    I am not a fan of speculative diagnosis, it costs time and money.

    If you are getting it scanned with VAG-COM get them to look at the MAF and check that the airflow is being seen correctly. Especially under load if that is where the fault occurs.

    If you thing they won't know how to do that check out measuring blocks at ross-tech.com

    when my 4Mo was misfiring, I got in touch with my local VW service centre and they told me they charge $65 for a diagnostic check. Luckily mine was just no 3 cyl misfire, so it was easier to diag, but it might be worth taking yours in and paying the $65 for the check then get the redemy work done elsewhere..

    Just out of interest.

    I've seen ignition module failure's that can cause intermittent misfire problem's.

    Not the ignition coil. the module with the two plug's & heat sink.

    *UPDATE*

    I removed the coil pack and found a fair crack on the plastic/black part of the coil body, but not in the epoxy section, is this enough to cause the problems??

    Could be. I have heard of folk sticking the coil pack somewhere warm and then covering the crack with epoxy and having success curing the misfire.

    Has to be worth a try.
