205/55/16 tyre recommendations for a Bora

Just side track abit on this thread, I spent too much money with tyres lately and yet another car in the family needs new tyres , not VW though.
After the disappointment with Michilen PP lately I decide to try something cheap, with about half price of all big brand name tyres, I bought 4 Federal (Taiwan made) for my Toyota, so far very happy with them, good wet performance and very quiet. There are good non-big-name tyres out there !

Another "no name" tyre that is good is the Bob Jane Zenon Z1. I have just picked up a full set of 195/50/15 tyres fitted for $380! When I starting buying that size 14 years ago each tyre cost nearly that much and they weren't as good!

Well, I fitted some 225/50/16 RE001's on my oem rim and it seems to grip very well in the wet. Though obviously you have to wait for the running in compound to rub off !

My braking has certainly improved and corner grip, will have to wait to find out ! But I never really had a problem with corner grip before !

Has anyone actually gone to a 225/50/16
Is the extra width any benefit if only a little one?
Or would a top of the range 205/55/16 be just a good.

id imagine it does amazing things in the traction department.
my only question would be can the stock 16x6.5 wheels legally house the 225/50s...?

Bridgestone have the 225/50/16 as an 'optional size'
225 will give an awsome grip , especially after I do my suspension

if your not going to lower it far (50mm+) i cant see it causing problems, the 205/55s has such a big sagging side wall that it would be about equal with putting 20mm wider tyres on (only 10mm each side).
not sure what model you are looking at exactly but some tyres in that size seem to be able to legally be fitted to a 6.5"
I have a feeling the mk3 VR comes with 225/50/15s and they are a 6.5" wide wheel so pretty much the same thing.

I'm pretty sure 225/50 is legal on 16x6.5.

Minimum for 225 is a 6 inch rim and has same diameter as a 205/55

Asked him about 225/50 and although you can fit it, it won't perform to its best. A 7 or even 7.5inch rim would be more ideal.
