ok just spent a few hours on it. pulled throttle body apart and was full of carbon gunk build up. cleaned it out with throttle body cleaner and ran the engine. ran rough like expected but after half an hour it was still running rough.
as i was putting panels back on, i noticed there was a breather hose that goes from the air intake to engine oil fill point which didnt have a clamp, put a $3 clamp and and although the engine is hot its running like a dream.
fingers crossed its fixed when i start it cold again.
I know it's been a while but was wondering whether you fixed this issue. I have a similar issue with my mk6 golf gti. On cold starts if I hold the throttle between 1000 rpm to 1800 rpm it will ref very erratically and won't hold steady. This makes the car very jerky when driving but it does seem to idle fine. When the car is warm it is heeps better but I still get a little cough and splutter around 1400 rpm when driving or still.
