    2001 Bora 4Motion timing chain

    hi all.

    I recently purchased a basically stock 2001 4Motion Bora, (so 2.8, 6sp)- approx 110,000 km.
    I am under the impression these use a timing chain however one mechanic maintained the chain needs to be changed, usually about 90k.
    I cannot find out at the moment if it was done, except all the services were done pretty much on the dot almost exclusively at a 'dealer'.

    Nothing obvious in my manual indicates chain change is needed.
    Ideas?

    Also, car was lowered somewhere along the line (about 40mm I'd say) with different springs.
    I reckon it suffers a little from bump steer when the rear goes over mild bumps.
    Comments?
    Is this a common issue?

    its a chain, no u dont.

    the mechanic is a fwit, to change a change costs double the amount for a belt, i rang up 3 vw dealers and 3 independants when someone said the same thing to me...

    it needs to be changed every 200k,

    Concur, the Americans on Vwvortex do it at about 100 000 Miles to be safe but you would easily get away with 200 000 Km's. Check which ones you have, you can probably more than likely change the ride height.

    To change the chain you need to remove the gearbox, clutch, flywheel, intake manifold, valve cover and the chain covers. i was quoted 10-12 hours work.

    Dont need to do it unless its VERY noisy.

    Hey thx guys, I think the dealer must have thought this engine had a belt when he said it should be changed at 90k kms.
    Funny, he had the service history right there on the screen in front of him.

    Even so, what a dill.

    VW's with belts are changed at 120k.

    Jap cars are done at 100k.

    No car as far as I am aware needs a change at 90k.

    The 1.8T needs to be done at 90, aswell as a ****load of other engines....

    Holden Vectra V6's are done at 60k!

    My mistake fellas... I had a 2001 GTI and for some reason, it was done at 100k.

    As for a vectra... I am surprised its not at half that

    Audi A3 and A4's are changed every 4 years or 60,000 kays...
