Hi Lorri and welcome!
I have the same model golf. As far as i am aware they were dealership specials to celebrate VW winning some form of the Australian Rally Championship. The extra's included colour coded door rub strips, dark tinted taillights, 15" Amaroo alloys and the 'rally' badging that give you an extra 25kw Mine scored a sunroof as well and is a 5 speed manual. How about yours?
The 1.6 isn't going to set the world on fire but i love getting 600km from a tank around town and the interior is a great place to be especially at night with the blue and red dials
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Hello Matt and thanks for replying, I thought I was all alone in the VW world,I put the question on a few sites with no replys.
Just got the car on friday, so still leaning how she works, mine is a 5 speed manual as well but I missed out on the sunroof. 600 km's sound real good to me, I sure love those blue lights as well, mine are sweet!
How long have you had yours and any problems? Hey can you tell me about the locking system, I have two keys, think they are orignal, bashed around a bit, do they unlock the car remotely? The battery is flat in mine and the other feels solid not a button. Would like a remote one if possible. Cheers Lorri

Haha yeah i know what you mean, the 1.6 doesn't get much love, it's all 1.8T and R32 which is fair enough i guess as that what most enthusiasts buy.
I've had the car for 1.5 yrs but our family has had it since new. It's sitting at around 163,000 km and has been trouble free really. Just maintenance and oil changes. However it is in need of a new clutch in the near future. I'd also like to replace the bushings in the front end with the solid rubber units from the R32/TT, but that's just me being fussy
I have 3 keys, a main key with the VW logo in colour that can be pushed down to turn on a small light at the head of the key fob, a spare key which is solid without the button as you described and a plastic valet/service key.
Unfortunetly we missed out on remote central locking, however someone might know how to retro fit a kit into your car.
One nice trick especially in summer is placing the key in the lock and holding it in the open position for a couple of seconds and watching the windows open. The reverse works for closing the windows after your out of the car.
Enjoy the car mate
