1.6 MkIV Golf Spark Plug Removal

    Hey everyone,

Went to change the plugs on the wifes 1.6 on the weekend, and involved me staring blankly at the block for 10 minutes trying to LOCATE the plugs before swearing and then retreating upstairs feeling very unmanly.

I have now located where the plugs are, but they have a metal extension on the top of them.

So I searched the interwebs and I found people using the following tool to remove the 'metal extension' things ontop of the plugs:

It seems to be used for changing the plugs on a vr6, but people are saying you need it for the 1.6L aswell. Are there any australian sellers? Is the T10029 the right tool for the 1.6?

Since its a pain in the ass to change the plugs, maybe I should jam in some platinums and forget about them.

Can someone give me some advice as to how to tackle this job?

A tutorial would be great with pictures.

get all the plastic covers off the top of the engine.

unpulg the coil packs and they pull out - sometime they are easy, sometimes they are not...

get a long extension on your socket driver and use that to undo the spark plugs.

this may help you visualise it all:

Hi, You need to remove all of the plastic engine covers first.

Number 1 and 4 plugs are pretty easy to get to so changing isn't a problem. I simply used long needle nosed pliers to put the HT leads off the plugs. CAREFULLY. There are no coil packs as such as we have the 8V engine (AKL)

Plugs 2 and 3 you will need a sparkplug socket with a universal joint and an extension as they are accessed between the manifold runners. They are a bit difficult to get to but with much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth you'll change them OK.

    Hope this helps

When you mean all plastic covers... I only have 1 big cover? What else can be removed?

Here are some pictures of an engine similar to mine:

Then the front of the engine from a diagonal viewpoint:

Then the front of the engine with 2 sparkplugs circled:

Ill attempt the technique described by craig the german as we are talking the same engine Im pretty sure.. Thanks for the help everyone.

If you could identify what other plastic things to remove that would be great.
